So, how did a name like Youthful-VA-Jayjay even happen?

Let’s just face it.

Going to the gynecologist is not exactly something most women look forward to.

You are lying there with your legs open, the brightest light in the room pointed directly at the one place you would normally prefer to keep private, trying to make regular conversation while somebody is examining your lady parts.

Male doctor, female doctor—it is still awkward.

I have been there too.

Over the years, though, I stopped looking at those appointments as just something uncomfortable I had to get through. I started paying attention. I started asking questions. I wanted to understand my own body better.

But the story of Youthful-VA-Jayjay actually started before I ever had a product to sell.

And it started in one of the most ordinary ways possible.

One Morning in 2012

In September 2012, I put my kids on the school bus and came back home.

We had moved to Pennsylvania the year before, and at that time I really did not have anywhere to go.

So I sat on the couch and turned on the television.

For about three weeks I had been watching this reality show about young Italian Americans living in Brooklyn. I believe it was called Brooklyn 112, although after all these years I may not remember the exact name or network correctly.

The show was basically fighting, cheating, arguing, somebody sleeping with somebody they were not supposed to be sleeping with, and then more fighting.

I remember sitting there watching all of this foolishness and thinking:

All this trouble over ass?

I actually said it.

Then I remembered an old saying I had heard years before:

“Wars have been started over pussy.”

And watching that show, I thought, well... I can see how.

But then my mind went somewhere else.

I started thinking that if these young people did not get themselves together, one day they were going to be older and all of this fighting over who was sleeping with who was not going to seem quite so important.

And then I thought about my grandmother.

My grandmother was in her eighties, and she was still sexually active with her longtime boyfriend, who was in his seventies.

My sisters and I knew it, and believe me, that had always fascinated us.

I remember sitting there thinking:

My grandmother is eighty-something years old. How is she still this youthful and active?

Because everything women seemed to hear about getting older made it sound as if once you reached a certain age, that part of your life was supposed to be over.

My grandmother apparently did not get that memo.

And then another thought came to me:

You have to keep yourself healthy.

And without planning it, without writing anything down, without sitting there trying to come up with a business name, I said out loud:

“Youthful-VA-Jayjay.”

I just sat there for a second.

Then I got up and ran upstairs.

That is really how the name happened.

Then I Started Searching

I got on the computer looking for websites that were specifically dedicated to information about keeping the vagina healthy.

I found articles.

I found bits and pieces of information.

But I did not find the kind of dedicated place I had imagined in my head.

So I kept reading.

From September through December 2012, I read everything I could find on the subject.

One article led to another question.

One question led to another search.

And before I realized it, something that had started with me sitting on my couch watching reality television had turned into a real interest.

I wanted to know more about women’s bodies.

I wanted to understand what happens as we age.

I wanted women to be able to talk about their bodies without acting as though the subject itself was shameful.

And I wanted to understand more for myself.

The Website Came Before the Products

In 2013, I started building my first Youthful-VA-Jayjay website using Solo Build It.

That part of the story matters to me because YVJJ did not begin as a Shopify store.

There were no products lined up on shelves.

There were no labels.

There were no bundles.

There was no business launch.

From roughly 2013 through 2018, I was building, researching, writing, learning and figuring out what Youthful-VA-Jayjay was supposed to become.

And while all of that was happening, another part of my life kept feeding into it.

Years earlier, when I was in college, I had signed up for an aerobics and fitness course.

I got hooked.

That class opened my mind to health and wellness in a way I had never thought about before.

It made me curious about food, exercise, supplements, skin, aging and the way the body changes over time.

That curiosity stayed with me.

My Grandmother Stayed in My Head Too

I kept coming back to my grandmother.

Not because I thought everybody needed to live exactly the way she did.

But because she challenged something I had unconsciously accepted.

She made me question the idea that a woman simply reaches a certain age and stops being feminine, sensual, interested in intimacy or interested in taking care of herself.

She was still living her life.

That stayed with me.

And the older I became, the more I understood why that meant something to me.

I did not want women—including me—to look at getting older as though we were simply becoming used up.

That is part of the meaning behind the word Youthful in Youthful-VA-Jayjay.

It was never just about looking young.

It was about continuing to care about yourself.

Then I Went Deeper Into Herbs

By 2019, I wanted more than internet research.

I went to herbal school.

By the end of that year, I had created my first product.

It was called SHE-POP.

I did not create SHE-POP and immediately start selling it.

It was for use at home.

I was still learning.

Still working things out.

Still figuring out what I wanted my products to be.

Then came January 2020.

That was when I signed up for Shopify and started building the actual Youthful-VA-Jayjay storefront and preparing products for sale.

That same month and year, I formed DOJAEH ENTERPRISES LLC.

So when someone asks me when Youthful-VA-Jayjay started, the answer is not as simple as one date.

The idea was born in 2012.

The website-building years started in 2013.

The product-development stage became serious in 2019.

And the commercial business officially began taking shape in 2020.

And Then COVID Hit

I cannot tell the story of starting this business in 2020 without talking about COVID.

I was building.

Planning.

Creating.

Trying to launch something I had already been carrying around in my head for years.

And then the world shut down.

I was devastated.

Like so many people, I had no idea what was going to happen next.

Starting a new business is already uncertain.

Starting one while the world is dealing with a pandemic is something else entirely.

But Youthful-VA-Jayjay survived it.

And I kept going.

YVJJ Has Changed Because I Have Changed

Youthful-VA-Jayjay began with women.

That will always be part of our history.

I am not interested in rewriting the story and pretending otherwise.

But as I learned more, the business grew.

I started creating and working with body products.

Herbal products.

Bath products.

Supplements.

Steam products.

Products for men.

Personal-care tools.

And products that simply make the routine easier.

Today, Youthful-VA-Jayjay is much bigger in purpose than the idea I had sitting on that couch in 2012.

But I can still see the connection.

It is still about taking care of yourself.

It is still about understanding what you are using.

And it is still about not deciding that your body stops mattering simply because you are getting older.

I Am Still Learning

One thing I will never pretend is that I know everything.

I don’t.

I research.

I test.

I reformulate.

I change things when I learn something better.

There are products I made years ago that I would formulate differently today.

And I am comfortable saying that.

That is not failure to me.

That is growth.

I would rather remove a product, work on it, improve it and bring it back better than continue doing something simply because that is how I used to do it.

Youthful-VA-Jayjay has changed because I have changed, learned and grown.

Small-Batch Really Means Small-Batch Here

A number of the products carrying the YVJJ name are actually made or prepared by us in small batches.

I work with the ingredients.

I grind herbs.

I measure.

I blend.

I fill capsules.

I prepare batches.

This is not always an industrial-machine process where every botanical particle looks identical to the one before it.

Herbs are natural materials.

Handmade products can have small natural differences.

What matters to me is knowing the formula, knowing the process and knowing what is going into the products we make.

Other items in the store are carefully selected because they belong with the routines I have created.

I do not want to fill YVJJ with random things simply because I could sell them.

I want the products to make sense together.

A Little More About Me

My name is Kay R. Holman, founder of Youthful-VA-Jayjay® and owner of DOJAEH ENTERPRISES LLC.

Over the years, my education followed many of the same interests that eventually came together in this business.

2004 — Certificate in Biblical Counseling and Women’s Ministry, Extraordinary Women Ministries

2006 — Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Metropolitan College of New York

2017 — Aesthetics / Skin Care and Skin Conditioning training, Jolie Beauty Academy

2019 — Herbalist Studies, Basic and Advanced, School of Natural Health Sciences

2022 — Peristeam Facilitator Certification

But none of those things by themselves created Youthful-VA-Jayjay.

My life did.

My experiences as a woman.

My grandmother.

My children getting on that school bus one morning in 2012.

That ridiculous reality show.

My curiosity.

My years of reading and researching.

My education.

My mistakes.

My improvements.

The products that worked.

The ones I went back and changed.

And the fact that after all these years, I am still interested enough to ask:

Can I make this better?

That is YVJJ.

Where We Are Going Now

Youthful-VA-Jayjay is still growing.

You will see products for women.

You will see products for men.

You will see body care, herbal products, supplements, bath products, steam products, preparation tools, personal-care accessories, After-Steam products and bundles that make sense together.

And you will probably see me change a few things along the way.

I would rather build this business slowly, learn as I go and correct what needs correcting than pretend I got everything right the first time.

I didn’t.

But I kept going.

And something that started with me sitting alone on a couch in Pennsylvania in 2012 is still here.

That means something to me.
